The end of 2024 brings us to the close of another fabulous year of green infrastructure in Washington, DC! Cheers to the new year and the stormwater systems we hold dear.

The RiverSmart Homes Program, managed and funded by the District’s Department of Energy and Environment, provides assistance to DC residents who would like to have stormwater practices installed on their residential properties. The Alliance coordinates the installation of rain gardens, rain barrels, BayScapes, and permeable surface replacements. Here’s an overview of the 689 installations that hit the ground in 2024 thanks to collaboration, hard-working installers, and advocates for clean water in DC!

Round of applause for rain barrels

359 rain barrels were installed, capturing enough water for around 2,635 average-length showers (but, please, don’t shower with your rain barrel water). Rain barrels capture stormwater from your roof so you can use it later on to water your plants, wash your car, etc.

big hand for bayscaping

239 BayScaping gardens were installed, covering the square footage of almost 2 full Washington Capitals ice hockey rinks. BayScaping gardens reduce stormwater runoff and erosion by using plants native to the Chesapeake Bay. They attract pollinators and beautify any yard they’re in.

put your hands together for permeable surfaces

35 permeable surface projects were installed, addressing almost 30 pickleball courts worth of impervious surfaces! Permeable surfaces can reduce runoff and puddling on your property by allowing stormwater to soak back into the ground.

give it up for rain gardens

56 rain gardens were installed, covering around the same area as 8 and a half Metrobuses! Rain gardens collect and filter stormwater naturally while letting it soak back into the ground.
