The end of 2023 brings us to the close of another fabulous year of green infrastructure in Washington, DC! “‘Tis the season for stormwater management” is how the carol goes, right?

The RiverSmart Homes Program, managed and funded by the District’s Department of Energy and Environment, provides assistance to DC residents who would like to have stormwater practices installed on their residential properties. The Alliance coordinates the installation of rain gardens, rain barrels, BayScapes, and permeable surface replacements. Here’s an overview of the 813 installations that hit the ground in 2023 thanks to collaboration, hard-working installers, and advocates for clean water in DC!

Rain Barrel Bonanza

301 rain barrels were installed, capturing enough water for around 2,620 average-length showers (but, please, don’t shower with your rain barrel water). Rain barrels capture stormwater from your roof so you can use it later on to water your plants, wash your car, etc.

BayScape Bliss

372 BayScaping gardens were installed, covering the square footage of the White House (Wings included!). BayScaping gardens reduce stormwater runoff and erosion by using plants native to the Chesapeake Bay. They attract pollinators and beautify any yard they’re in.

Permeable Surface Sensation

33 permeable surface projects were installed, addressing around 8 regulation tennis courts worth of impervious surfaces! Permeable surfaces can reduce runoff and puddling on your property by allowing stormwater to soak back into the ground.

Rain Garden Glory

107 rain gardens were installed, covering around the same area as 22 single-car garages lined up side by side! Rain gardens collect and filter stormwater naturally while letting it soak back into the ground.

Thank you for another great year of impactful green infrastructure projects! From property owners, to contractors, to casual conversations with your neighbors about the importance of green infrastructure installations, your efforts help us create a cleaner Bay for all who call it home.
