HBCU/MSI Chesapeake Bay Summit

September 7-8, 2024 at North Bay in North East, Maryland

The HBCU/MSI Chesapeake Bay Summit will bring together students and faculty members from HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and MSIs (Minority Service Institutions) in Washington, DC and Maryland to discuss issues related to the Chesapeake Bay.

The goals of this event are to:

1. Foster connections between students and faculty at HBCUs and MSIs in the watershed

2. Build the capacity of students to pursue environmental careers and address environmental challenges in their communities

3. Highlight environmental initiatives on HBCU and MSI campuses in the watershed

Key Information

  • The Summit is free and designed for any current HBCU/MSI students and faculty.
  • Attendees do not need to have any previous outdoor experience in order to participate.
  • Free bus transportation will be provided from each participating partner university’s campus (Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Howard University, Morgan State University, Trinity Washington University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and University of the District of Columbia).
  • Meals and lodging are provided for the duration of the Summit.

Summit Structure

Day 1:

  • Welcome remarks by Dr. Mamie Parker, Former Head of Fisheries at USFWS
  • Networking and team-building
  • Panel discussions and small-group breakout sessions (Topics to include: climate justice, restoration, engineering & stormwater, etc.)

Day 2:

  • Environmental careers networking workshop and discussion
  • Closing remarks by Kate Fritz, CEO at Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, and Mariah Davis, Environmental Justice Officer at Maryland DNR
  • Outdoor adventures, like ziplining, fishing, kayaking, and more.
