The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 18, 2021, marks the 26th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates the Civil Rights leader’s life and legacy. Observed each year on the third Monday in January as “day on, not a day off.” MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
This year, we encourage you to opt outside for MLK Day, grab a trash bag, and walk your neighborhood collecting trash. By cleaning up your neighborhood, you can help make your community a cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful space for all, and keep trash from entering your local waterways and eventually the Chesapeake Bay.
Check out this blog by our Project Clean Stream coordinator, Lucy Heller, about how she practices cleaning up her neighborhood.
