Ways to Give

Thank you for making an impact for our rivers and streams!

Your generous, tax-deductible donation empowers our work to restore the lands and waters in the Chesapeake Bay watershed day in and day out. By donating to the Alliance, you enable us to continue to make real change possible – we can plant trees, restore streams and rivers, enhance healthy forests, measure and track local water quality, create green jobs, and give a voice to all those who believe in clean waters and a healthy Chesapeake.

The Alliance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. For more information visit our Financials & Accountability page.

Give Monthly

A monthly gift is of great benefit to the Alliance as it allows for consistent support to bridge the gaps between other funding sources. It can also be more organized for the donor because it can be efficiently planned into a budget.

The Alliance strives to make giving on a monthly basis as convenient as possible. Simply select your preference for recurrence on the donation webpage.

If you have any questions about making a monthly donation, please contact Mason Hendrick at mhendrick@allianceforthebay.org or 443-949-0575.

Give Your Legacy

The Alliance has been hard at work for over 52 years restoring our lands and waters for future generations. Our solutions are science-based and continue to evolve to ensure that we make the biggest impact possible on the long-term health of our communities. Leaving a gift to the Alliance is a wonderful way to ensure that your values live on beyond your lifetime.

A Gift in Your Will or Trust

Leaving a gift in your will or trust is a very common way to create a legacy with the Alliance.

  • You retain control of your assets during your lifetime: These gifts cost nothing at this time.
  • You choose the amount. There is no minimum contribution required.
  • You can provide for your loved ones and play a personal role in restoring the Chesapeake Bay watershed.  You can put your family first by stating, “If my partner survives me, then I leave my entire state to my partner.  If my partner does not survive me, then I leave my estate as follows…”
  • You can stay flexible by using percentages.  For example, “I give to the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay 50% of my residuary estate to be used for its general purposes.”
  • You may change your plans at any time.
  • You can remain anonymous.
  • You can leave a gift in honor or memory of someone special.

Beneficiary Designation

Alliance supporters like you frequently tell us, “I wish I could do more.”  One way you can contribute is by naming the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay as a beneficiary. Include the Alliance as a beneficiary of these types of accounts:

  • Retirement Accounts
  • Life Insurance Policies
  • Bank or Brokerage Accounts
  • Certificates of Deposits

These designations are easy to do, and a will is not required.  Just update your policy at any time by requesting a beneficiary designation form from your account administrator.  You can designate the Alliance as a partial, contingent, or sole beneficiary of your account. Simply complete the form and mail it back, keeping a copy for your files.

To designate a gift to the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, simply provide the legal name and taxpayer identification number on your provider’s beneficiary designation form. For example:
Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, Tax ID# 54-1060924.

Please notify us of a gift you have left to the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay so that we can properly thank you.

You can view our Donor Confidentiality and Privacy Policy here.

This information is not intended as tax or legal advice. We recommend that you consult with your financial/legal advisors to learn how a gift would work in your circumstances.

Give in Memory

A Memorial gift is a caring and thoughtful way to show remembrance, to honor the memory of a loved one, or celebrate a birthday, anniversary, retirement or other special life event!

Your gift will also have a lasting impact on the environment and will help the Alliance continue our mission to restore and protect the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed forests, rivers, and streams for generations to come.

The Alliance is honored to share in your expression of care.

Give Through Your IRA

Gifts from your retirement account can support the Alliance.

You’ve spent a career working hard and planning for your retirement.  By leveraging your retirement assets, you can benefit yourself and your family, reduce your tax burden, and support the Alliance’s mission of restoring the lands and waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

Alliance supporters who are age 70 ½ or older can contribute up to $100,000 from their IRA directly to a charity and avoid paying income taxes on the distribution. This is known as a qualified charitable distribution.  By sending your annual or special year-end gift to the Alliance directly through your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) through a QCD, you exclude the gift amount from your taxable income.  This enables you to enjoy valuable tax savings.

When you name a charity as a beneficiary to receive your IRA or other retirement assets upon your death, rather than donating retirement assets during your lifetime, the benefits multiply:

  • Neither you and your heirs nor your estate will pay income taxes on the distribution of the assets.
  • Your estate will need to include the value of the assets as part of the gross estate but will receive a tax deduction for the charitable contribution, which can be used to offset the estate taxes.
  • Because charities do not pay income tax, the full amount of your retirement account will directly benefit the charity of your choice.
  • It’s possible to divide your retirement assets between charities and heirs according to any percentage you choose.
  • You have the opportunity to support a cause you care about as part of your legacy.

When you’re ready, making a charity the beneficiary of your IRA or other retirement assets is typically straightforward.  Fill out a designated beneficiary form through your employer or your plan administrator. Most banks and financial services firms also have beneficiary forms, or they can provide you with suggested language for naming beneficiaries to these accounts. Once the designated beneficiary forms are in place, the retirement assets will generally pass directly to your beneficiaries (including charities) without going through probate.

To initiate a current or future gift to the Alliance through your retirement account, contact your plan administrator today. Please have the following information available:

Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay
151 West Street, Suite 101
Annapolis, MD 21401
Tax ID# 54-1060924

Give Through Donor Advised Funds (DAF)

Charitable giving through Donor Advised Funds (DAF) is simple and efficient.

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a giving account established at a public charity that provides an immediate tax benefit to you and allows you to grant funds over time. Here’s how you can give:

  1. Contact your financial institution or local community foundation to recommend a gift.  There is no cost to establish a DAF.
  2. Make an initial gift of cash or stock to the DAF* and receive an immediate charitable deduction. *A minimum initial charitable contribution may be required.
  3. You are in the driver’s seat and make annual recommendations on gifts to be directed from your DAF to the Alliance or other qualified charities you support. There are no transaction fees, so 100% of your recommended grant goes to your charity of choice.

Will a DAF be right for you?

  • They provide an immediate tax deduction even if you choose to direct charitable gifts over several years.
  • If you require a current-year tax dedication due to extra income or a special taxable event.
  • DAFs provide a simple way to give if you donate to many charitable groups.

You can also choose to have any remaining DAF funds distributed to the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay after your lifetime by naming the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay as a beneficiary of all or a portion of the remaining funds.  Ask your DAF administrator for more information.
