Rain garden installed through RiverSmart Homes program in District Ward 3[three_fifth class=”acb-img-content-wrap” ]The RiverSmart Homes Program has successfully completed its 1000th stormwater reduction project!

RiverSmart Homes has been installing rain gardens, BayScapes, and replacing impervious surface since 2009. We are incredibly proud of this milestone and are thrilled that DC homeowners remain excited about the program and continue to work towards reducing stormwater runoff in the District.

The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and the District Department of the Environment have been working together on the RiverSmart Homes Program to achieve the District’s goal of reducing stormwater runoff in the city. A majority of properties in DC are privately owned, so by working with homeowners to install native landscaping and permeable surfaces, we can capture large amounts of stormwater before it enters the storm drains and potentially overwhelms the antiquated sewer systems.  Additionally, these projects allow pollutants to be captured on land before reaching local waterways which helps improve water quality.You can find more information about the RiverSmart Program on our program page.  If you would like to be a part of this incredible program, please visit the DDOE website to sign up for your property’s stormwater audit.

Our RiverSmart Rebate Program is also available to provide additional assistance to District homeowners looking to install a rain garden or replace impervious surface.
