Originally from North Carolina, John found his love for the natural world at a young age playing in creeks, hiking with his parents and experiencing both the coast and southern Appalachia in the same state. John joined the Alliance as the Communications and Social Media Coordinator in August of 2022, working out of our Pennsylvania office. He focuses on highlighting the work of the Alliance and our partners, elevating voices of Chesapeake Bay citizens and creating new opportunities to engage community members through our social media channels.
John graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Specialized Studies in Environmental Health and Geography. During his last semester there, he supported a project with the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service to restore riparian buffers along Ohio streams and rivers. After developing a passion for social and environmental causes, he later obtained a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Duke University.
John discovered his passion for communications and nonprofit work during an internship with Rural Action, an organization committed to equitable, sustainable development in rural, southeast Ohio. He then relocated to Buffalo, NY to serve as the Education and Outreach Assistant for the Western New York Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (WNY PRISM). There, he managed social media accounts, created written and visual resources and led education events with partners to galvanize western New York’s citizens to spread the word about the impacts of invasive species.
In his free time, John enjoys cooking, riding his bike, producing music, creating visual art and fostering cats.
