Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Sophie spent her childhood enjoying all that the midwest has to offer with her family and childhood dogs. She graduated from the University of Vermont with a B.S. in Natural Resource Planning. She then served in various SCA AmeriCorps positions in state and national parks across the country, including New Mexico, Arizona, Massachusetts, Utah, and Indiana, teaching environmental education, building trails, and conducting field research. Sophie moved to Richmond in 2017 and learned to love all things water living along the James River and exploring the local park systems.
Sophie joined the Alliance in 2019 and is currently the Water Quality Monitoring Projects Manager based out of the Richmond, VA office. She primarily oversees the RiverTrends project, a volunteer-based water quality monitoring program training community members to collect water quality data in Virginia and Maryland. Sophie enjoys connecting volunteers to their waterways while fostering a mindset of protection over those waterways. Sophie has a strong interest in equitable volunteer engagement and long-term partnership building.
In her free time, Sophie can be found enjoying the James River Park System on bike, boat, or foot with her dog, Pinecone and making pottery and other nature-inspired crafts.
